Levels of Spanish

At El Aula Azul San Sebastian or Santander we offer all levels of Spanish in all our course categories. Whether you don’t know any Spanish yet or you have a very advanced level, you can take a course with us and start acquiring the basics or make significant progress if you already have a certain level. Our courses are designed and adapted to the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) so you have all the guarantees that your course will be based on a coherent and effective learning plan in which we will work on all the language skills.

The CEFR describes the levels of Spanish as follows:

Level A1 (Access)

  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and simple sentences aimed at the satisfaction of immediate needs.
  • You can introduce yourself and others, ask for and give basic personal information about your address, your belongings and people you know.
  • You can relate in an elementary way as long as your interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to cooperate.

Level A2 (Platform)

  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. basic information about him/herself and family, shopping, places of interest, occupations, etc.).
  • Can communicate in simple, everyday tasks requiring simple and direct exchanges of information on familiar or routine matters.
  • Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background and environment, as well as issues related to his/her immediate needs.

Level B1 (Threshold)

  • Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school or leisure situations.
  • Can deal with most of the situations that may arise during a trip in areas where the language is used.
  • Is able to produce simple and coherent texts on topics that are familiar to him/her or in which he/she has a personal interest.
  • You can describe experiences, events, desires and aspirations, as well as briefly justify your opinions or explain your plans.

Level B2 (Advanced)

  • Is able to understand the main ideas of complex texts dealing with both concrete and abstract topics, even if they are of a technical nature, as long as they are within his/her field of specialization.
  • Can interact with native speakers with a sufficient degree of fluency and naturalness so that communication is effortless for the interlocutors.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and defend a point of view on general topics, giving the pros and cons of various options.

Level C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency)

  • Is able to understand a wide variety of long and demanding texts and to recognize implicit meanings in them.
  • Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious effort to find the right expression.
  • Can make flexible and effective use of the language for social, academic and professional purposes.
    Can produce clear, well-structured and detailed texts on topics of a certain complexity, showing a correct use of the mechanisms of organization, articulation and cohesion of the text.

Level C2 (Master)

  • He is able to understand with ease virtually everything he hears or reads.
  • Knows how to reconstruct information and arguments from various sources, whether in spoken or written language, and present them in a coherent and summarized manner.
  • Can express him/herself spontaneously, with great fluency and with a degree of precision that allows him/her to differentiate small nuances of meaning even in more complex situations.
